Pace, Time, and Distance Formulas
The three running metrics are directly related. Knowing any two lets you calculate the third.
Pace = Time ÷ Distance
Time = Pace × Distance
Distance = Time ÷ Pace
Example: 45:00 over 9 km → 5:00/km pace
How to Use a Pace Calculator for Training
Pace is the fundamental metric for runners and walkers. Unlike speed, which tells you kilometres per hour, pace tells you how many minutes it takes to cover each kilometre or mile — a number that maps directly to split markers on race courses and GPS watch readouts.
Training plans commonly prescribe workouts by pace zone. Easy runs are done at a comfortable conversational pace, tempo runs push into a comfortably-hard zone, and interval sessions hit faster paces for short bursts. Knowing your current pace range lets you follow these plans precisely.
For race planning, enter your goal finish time and race distance to find the exact pace you need to maintain. You can also plug in a known comfortable pace to predict your finish time across different distances, from a 5K to a marathon.
