How Age Is Calculated

Age calculation is a calendar subtraction problem. The algorithm works in three steps: count full elapsed years, then full elapsed months in the remainder, then remaining days.

Step 1: years = floor((end − start) in days ÷ 365.25)

Step 2: advance start by years, count remaining months

Step 3: remaining days = end − adjusted start

Total days is computed directly as the difference between the two calendar dates, accounting for every leap year between them.

Age Across Cultures and Calendars

In most Western countries, age is counted from zero at birth and increments by one on each birthday. This is called the Western age system.

In the traditional East Asian age system (used historically in China, Korea, and Japan), a person is considered 1 year old at birth and gains a year on the lunar new year rather than their birthday. This can make a person 1–2 years older by East Asian count than by Western count. South Korea officially standardised to the Western system in 2023.

Different calendar systems — Gregorian, Julian, Hebrew, Islamic Hijri — also affect how dates and ages are calculated. This calculator uses the Gregorian calendar, which is the international civil standard.

Frequently asked questions

How is exact age calculated?
The calculator finds the difference between the birth date and the target date. It counts full years first, then full months in the remaining period, then the remaining days. Leap years and varying month lengths are all handled automatically.
What is the difference between chronological age and biological age?
Chronological age is the number of years since birth — what this calculator computes. Biological age reflects the functional age of your body based on health markers such as telomere length, cardiovascular fitness, and metabolic rate, and can be higher or lower than your chronological age.
How many days old am I?
Multiply your age in years by 365.25 (to account for leap years) for a rough estimate, or use this calculator which computes the exact total days between your birth date and today.
Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. The calculator uses calendar-accurate date arithmetic, so February 29 birthdays and all leap year effects are handled correctly. The displayed age will be exact to the day.
Can I calculate the age of something other than a person?
Yes. Enter any past start date as the 'birth date' and the calculator will give you the exact elapsed time in years, months, and days — useful for determining the age of a business, a building, a vehicle, or any other dated event.
