How Weight Conversion Works
All units are expressed as a fixed ratio to the gram — the metric base unit for this converter. To convert from unit A to unit B, the value is multiplied by the gram factor of A, then divided by the gram factor of B.
result = value × (A_to_grams / B_to_grams)
Example: 5 kg → lb = 5 × (1,000 / 453.592) ≈ 11.023 lb
Metric
- 1 t = 1,000 kg
- 1 kg = 1,000 g
- 1 g = 1,000 mg
Imperial
- 1 st = 14 lb
- 1 lb = 16 oz
- 1 oz = 28.350 g
Metric vs Imperial Weight Units
The metric system uses grams and kilograms with consistent powers of ten. Kilograms are the standard unit for body weight and everyday commerce in most countries, while metric tons are used for large quantities such as freight and agriculture.
Imperial weight units — ounces, pounds, and stones — are used primarily in the United States and the United Kingdom. Pounds and ounces appear in food labelling and body weight in the US, while stones remain common for personal weight in the UK and Ireland.
