How Volume Conversion Works
All volume units are expressed as a fixed ratio to the milliliter — the metric base unit used in this converter. To convert from unit A to unit B, the value is multiplied by the milliliter factor of A, then divided by the milliliter factor of B.
result = value × (A_to_mL / B_to_mL)
Example: 2 L → gal = 2 × (1000 / 3785.41) ≈ 0.5283 gal
Metric
- 1 m³ = 1,000 L
- 1 L = 1,000 mL
Imperial / US
- 1 gal = 4 qt = 8 pt
- 1 cup = 8 fl oz
- 1 tbsp = 3 tsp
Metric vs US Volume Units
The metric system uses liters and milliliters for everyday liquids, and cubic meters for large volumes. These units scale cleanly by powers of ten and are used in scientific, medical, and culinary contexts worldwide.
US customary volume units — teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons — are widely used in American cooking and food labelling. While practical for recipes, their irregular ratios (3 teaspoons per tablespoon, 16 tablespoons per cup) make conversion more error-prone than metric equivalents.
